Be Inspired: The Retro Revival
Flip through the pages of any glamorous interior design magazine and you’re sure to find double page spreads filled with streamlined ‘50s furniture, geometric patterns and bright bold colours. Retro has made a huge comeback in recent years, and the result is a fun, unique look that works well in all types of residential and commercial spaces.
The Art Deco movement of the ‘20s is where the classic retro design style has its origins. This style was extremely popular in the ‘50s and ‘60s and most people associate these two decades with this look.
The popular colour schemes of the ‘50s and ‘60s were bold and bright, most likely a response to the bleak, hard years of war endured in the ‘40s. To create a retro look choose from hues such as sunshine yellow, cherry red, jade, turquoise, mint green, robin’s egg blue and pink. Add a dash of black, white, silver and chrome and your retro colour palette is complete.
Have some fun and search for furniture covered in geometric patterns, checkerboard, polka dots and stripes. Retro furniture can also easily be identified by its shape which is often rounded or curved in playful kidney and bubble designs, or clean and streamlined. The dramatic change in furniture style during the mid 20th Century is largely due to the new materials that were being produced after the war such as formica, plywood, plastic and fibreglass. Teak and pine were also popular, along with shiny materials including vinyl, laminate and linoleum.
To inject a splash of retro fun into a modern interior simply add a few great accessories such as a Retro Eames Era Floor Lamp, crocheted throw blanket, a colourful collection of murano glass, a piece of pop art, or a ‘50s ornament. As this was the era of the space age – rockets, planets, satellites and atomic clocks were all the rage. Alternatively go all out and wallpaper your kitchen just like grandma’s house.
Due to the popularity of this style restored retro furniture is expensive. The good news is there are many well priced retro furniture replicas and lights available that won’t break the bank – just check out our fab finds section for ideas.
