As we enter Spring and all of the looks it has to offer for our wardrobes and homes, it’s a fitting time to look to what Europe brought out in their Spring season earlier this year, and what better place to start than ‘Chelsea in Bloom’. This year, the 11th annual competition – an offshoot of the world-famous Chelsea Flower Show – once again saw retailers adorn their shops with floral displays in this year’s theme; ‘Carnival’.
Life-sized topiary elephants and huge floral parrots made from tropical plants were just some of the creations taking centre stage in Chelsea across 30 stores. However, they weren’t enough to take home the ‘best in show’ prize, which went to Monica Vinader for its two-metre mannequin dressed in vibrant flowers and plants in the form of a dress with a train of foliage onto the floor. Inspired by the traditional Rio de Janeiro Carnival flag bearers, the piece also features Monica Vinader’s iconic Friendship Bracelets stacked on the arms and a pair of colourful Cocktail Earrings.
Meanwhile, the Highly Commended Award went to La Perla‘s tree-like installation, with orange, blue and purple satin ribbons encompassing a flock of birds taking off from the front of the Sloane Street store. The Innovation Award went to Sarah Chapman for a fluid design of proteas, roses, carnations, chrysanthemums and succulents, making up a pattern that was inspired by the technology behind its signature skincare line, Skinesis. Finally, the People’s Champion Award went to Liz Earle for its flower-adorned merry-go-round.
