The Wonderful World of Wallpaper

Wallpaper is back in style. With many wonderful colours, patterns and innovative finishes to choose from, it is no longer considered a dowdy, old fashion decorating option. In this article Bernie looks at the exciting new varieties available and how wallpaper can totally transform the look and feel of a room.

Did you know that wallpaper began as an inexpensive alternative to tapestry in the 1400s? With the introduction of the steam-powered printing presses in Britain in 1813, wallpaper became accessible to the masses and remained hugely popular until the late 1980s when it began to fall out of fashion. Now with so many new types of wallpaper on the market it is once again being featured in contemporary homes and the results are spectacular.

Wallpaper Inspiration

Personalised wallpaper: Today your own photographs can be turned into wallpaper. Feature a treasured shot from your wedding day, or a happy family snap on your lounge room wall. You can also have your favourite poem or inspirational words printed onto wallpaper.

Wallpaper as art: Completely transform the mood of a room by covering a wall in an image. Create a tranquil atmosphere by selecting scenes from nature such as a rainforest, or seascape etc. For an edgy look choose an urban city skyline or fighter jet for high drama. Photos also work well in children’s bedrooms such as a castle in a princess themed bedroom. As the photo is such a strong visual focal point the rest of the room can be left quite neutral.

Recycled wallpaper: One particularly innovative company is creating wallpaper made from bits of recycled newspaper woven together – a fabulous three dimensional tactile finish.

Get the retro look: Iconic Australian wallpapers designed by Florence Broadhurst add instant style to a home. Create a greater impact by using the same design as a shade and/or bedspread.

Interactive wallpaper: Children will love this interactive wallpaper which features different size frames that they can colour, stick photos in and draw self portraits on.

Add a touch of glamour: It is also now possible to purchase glamorous wallpaper that is studded with Swarovski crystals and made with metallic feathers.

Bernie says when purchasing wallpaper, it is very much like selecting a piece of art. For the price of a painting you can cover a whole wall and add extra interest by hanging items on it such as an ornate mirror. The good news is just like art, wallpaper can easily be removed when you’re ready for a change. The non woven paper variety can be sprayed with water and peeled off, you can even reuse it in a different place.

Wallpaper can make a room appear larger or cosier. Large prints in warm colours will make a space feel more intimate, while smaller prints in lighter colours will make a room appear spacious. Another benefit is that wallpaper hides cracks and marks on walls.

Have some fun. Don’t be afraid to apply wallpaper in unexpected places such as inside a bookshelf, so when a book is pulled out a splash of colour is revealed. Wallpaper can also be used to cover furniture, such as the door of a cabinet. One artist covered his piano in a fantastic print – the possibilities are truly endless when it comes to the wonderful world of wallpaper.
