Ellen Pompeo’s Malibu Beach House

February 28, 2023

Grey’s Anatomy star, Ellen Pompeo, has opened up the doors to her recently renovated beach house in Malibu. It’s mid-century modern marvel, with gorgeous ocean views and my goodness, the lady really loves marble!  Lets take a look…

The home is a weekender for Ellen, her husband and their 3 children and was furnished with family and visitors in mind. The design inspiration for the home commenced with the purchase of the (very comfortable looking) living room sofa. The patchwork leather piece was sourced by Ellen’s designer and it is an original from the 1960s.

The bookended marble wall is a striking feature of the living room and is artwork within itself. The look is created by slicing a slab of marble in half into two thinner pieces, which can now be lined up next to each other with the marble's veins in mirror image.

The kitchen is small, but perfectly functional for a weekend home. The jars in the kitchen were sourced from a Parisian market. As the home is in LA and is prone to earthquakes, all the jars are taped to the shelf to protect them #clever

There are two, adjacent, dining areas in the home. When Ellen has guests they become the ‘adults table’ and the ‘kids table’', which is very relatable.

The hexagon dining table was sourced from Yves Saint Laurent’s studio. It was originally a cutting table and is now where Ellen’s 3 children eat their dinner. Gotta love a piece of furniture with a good story!

If you can steal your eyes away from the view, you may notice that the custom made ‘adults’ dining table has an inbuilt Lazy Susan, I applaud the practicality👏 . The chandelier above the round dining table is new, but was commissioned in a mid century style. It adds to the design of the room, without impeding the stunning ocean views.

The master bedroom also features marble, with the sections behind the bed adding a dramatic feature to the room. The marble bathroom is stunning, but Ellen states that she does regret getting a marble bath, as despite it looking amazing, it does not retain the heat.

Built in bunk beds are always gorgeous in beach houses. The port-hole windows in these bunks are so the children can see and talk to each other. The patterned grass cloth wallpaper on the ceiling is in a soft mauve, the decorating colours for the room (in the choice of rug, artwork, walls, curtains, cushions) were built around this element.

The mid-century lines of the home are more apparent with the teak-clad exterior. The pink day beds add a gorgeous contrast in colour.

Ellen is planning to add to her beach house as she reportedly paid $10 million USD for the neighbouring house. Fingers crossed that she releases pictures of the completed project. Watch this space!

If you would like to see more of Ellen Pompeo’s style, I took a look at the redesign she did of her on set trailer, the space she retreats to when she is between takes on Grey’s Anatomy.
