Five beautiful restaurants for your bucket list

May 22, 2022

A well-designed interior can do as much for a restaurant as the menu. There's no secret recipe of course for what makes a restaurant's design successful, but key features like uniqueness, flow, and warmth all help. We've gathered five of our favourite restaurant interiors from around the world for you to explore. Enjoy...

The Jane Restaurant, Antwerp, Belgium.

Dutch designer Piet Boon transformed the interior of a former military hospital chapel in Antwerp, Belgium, into a contemporary restaurant: The Jane. Boon worked with lighting designers. .PSLAB and artists Studio Job to create the new space, featuring a huge sculptural chandelier, almost spanning over the entire dining space; customary high ceilings that we can expect in a chapel; and a patterned tile floor. The black, teal and navy interior features create a warm, sophisticated and classic space.

Sketch, London, U.K.

The Sketch restaurant-cum-art gallery in London is renowned for its 239 commissioned drawings by artist David Shrigley. However, the monochromatic interior is just as striking. Created by French chef Pierre Gagnaire and restaurateur Mazouz, it is a space like no other. Pink from ceiling to floor and wall to wall, it's certainly not a restaurant for the pastel-opposed. Shirely's work wraps the walls with his strange, funny and often satirical childlike drawings, while touches of gold add 'bling' to the space.

La Sponda, Postiano, Italy.

Le Sirenuse’s La Sponda restaurant in Positano is Michelin star-rated, but people flock to this restaurant for more than just the food. Dine at evening, and you'll be surrounded by 400 candles, while any time of the day you'll be sitting among the romantic, vine-draped columns.

The Musket Room, New York, USA.

Inspired by an era in New Zealand when adventure and discovery blossomed, The Musket Room, which opened in 2013, brings the spirit of New Zealand to the diverse Nolita neighborhood of Manhattan.  The Michelin star-rated restaurant was designed by renowned Alexander Waterworth Interiors. It incorporates rustic and contemporary design elements, including a 20-foot walnut timber bar, a lime-washed exposed brick, and mid-century modern brass chandeliers. The 70-seat eatery boasts teal blue banquettes and midcentury lighting.

Liza Beirut, Lebanon.

Liza Beirut is an outpost in Lebanon of restaurateur Liza Asseily's highly acclaimed Parisian eatery. The restaurant stars wallpapers featuring banana leafs and ancient Lebanese lira, while the intricacy of the wooden seating and gold-detailed walls are the perfect fit for its location in a 19th-century palace.
